ELWOOD SX-SERIES
INSTALLATION AND START-UP RECOMMENDATIONS

CAUTION/IMPORTANT: Improper connection of motor leads or application of excessive current can damage or distroy a motor. Read the guidance below completely before applying power to or enabling your SX-Series motor.

1. Verify Wiring and Phasing
With power off and the motor mechanically disconnected from machinery or linkages, verify wiring of power, ground, thermal, brake (if equipped), and feedback conductors. A wiring diagram is included with each motor. Wiring diagrams are also included in the SX-Series Manual (click to download). Proper power wiring for specific drive manufacturers may differ from the wiring diagram provided by Elwood. Please refer below for wiring for several manufacturers.

Rockwell Automation Kinetix and Ultra with Resolvers
Rockwell Automation Kinetix and Ultra with Absolute Encoders
Rockwell Automation Kinetix5500, 2198-H2DCK Connector, and HIPERFACE Absolute Encoders
Rockwell Automation Kinetix and Ultra with Incremental Encoders

Control Techniques Unidrive SP

Note: The significant difference in the wiring (phasing convention) from the above manufacturers and Elwood's wiring diagram are the RED and WHITE (also referred to as U & V / B & C phases) power leads. If your motor does not rotate as expected after verifying connections, swap the RED and WHITE power leads.

2. Reduce Peak/Maximum Current
Excessive current will damage a motor. Until proper control of the motor is verified, reduce the drives parameter for peak or maximum current to the motor's continuous rated current. Consult the drive's documentation or the drive's manufacturer if you need assistance making this setting.

After proper control of the drive is achieved, set peak current to no more than three times (3x) the motor's continuous rated current.

3. Verify Thermal Protection Circuit
The thermal protection circuit will not protect the motor against current through the motor above the continuous rated current. However, the thermal protection circuit is critical to maintaining the motor's surface temperature below its tested ratings. Befor the motor is enabled, verify that a fault is created in the control's sofware/circuitry when the thermal protection circuit is opened.

4. Verify Brake Circuit
If the motor is equipped with a brake, verify its circuit and operation before enabling the motor. Brakes used in SX-Series motors are of the spring-set variety. They are designed for holding. If the brake is not operated properly it will wear-out and eventually fail. Applying the appropriate voltage to the brake leads releases the brake.

The brakes used on SX-Series motors (typically) use 24VDC coils. Coil voltage should be verified aginst the motor's data sheet before energizing. The brake coils are polarity sensitive (BROWN +VDC, Orange DC-COMMON).

When voltage is applied a "click" can be heard, and the motor's outuput shaft should turn freely.
