Carton Routing
No labor is required when using arrays of reflective tape marks in
a totally automated sorting operation. No slow downs or sorting
errors occur as long as photoelectric controls do the job of
identifying and sorting cartons by size, content, destination or
other criterion.
Carton have reflective tape marks in different arrangements, e.g,
on the side of the box at different heights above the conveyor.
Cartons with one configuration are shoved into the proper side
conveyor by one control which operates a pushing device. Cartons with
another tape configuration pass by this control and shoved into
another side conveyor by a second control.
Stations can detect one piece of tape at a given height, or
combinations of tape. For example, suppose a particular station is
designed to detect a pattern of two pieces of reflecting tape at
specific heights. The transistor outputs from the control are
connected in parallel (and logic) and the control phase switches are
set in the ''dark'' operating mode. The relay will remain energized
as long as at least on beam is dark. When all beams are light, the
correctly coded carton is present. More than two control can be used
if required.
This is one of many possible sorting and distribution operations
using Autotron photoelectric controls.
