Winding Roll To Length

A photoelectric control is used to measure paper automatically as it is wound on a roll.

The paper web is passed under a measuring wheel on its way to the winding machine. The measuring wheel is 12'' in circumference and is painted 1/4 black and 3/4 white. The measuring wheel also runs free at speeds up to 12000 feet per minute. The contrasting black and white of the measuring wheel trips the high-speed photoelectric batch counter on which the required roll length is preset.

After sufficient revolutions of the measuring wheel have indicated to the counter the completion of a pre-set roll length, the counter stops the winding machine.
