Edge Control
Photoelectric sensors may be used to control the lateral
positioning of cloth, belts, and other webs on rollers.
Photoelectric monitoring consists of two pairs of either
through-beam or retro-reflective scanners positioned above and below
one lateral edge of the web. One pair is positioned to pass a beam
just inside the desired maximum position (normally obscured), while
the other is positioned just outside (not normally obscured).
Corrections are instantly made when the web moves out of
alignment. If the material interrupts the outside light beam, the
control signals a mechanism to move the web away from this edge. When
the material moves over, the light beam is again restored.
If the material lets the inside light beam strike the reflector, the
mechanism moves the web towards the opposite edge.
