Wire Break Detection

Magnet wire is subject to breaking as it is being wound on large spools. Breakage must be detected and located among many spools instantly so that it can be repaired and the winding operation resumed. The problem is is that magnetic wire itself does not offer enough obstruction to block or restore the light beam of a photoelectric control.

To solve this problem, the magnet wire is passed over a grooved wheel as it is drawn from each spool to a bobbin. The grooved wheel is mounted on a pivoted staff with a stiff, opaque flag at the other end. The wire pulls the wheel down and elevates the flag. When a magnetic wire breaks, the flag drops and blocks a light beam. A single light beam is oriented to pass under the flags of each spool, such that any dropped flag can block the light beam.
